Marte, Renegade looks like a really good program. I have heard a lot of good
things about software support Int'l. I hear renegade combines all of the
utilities from krackerjax plus....I'd just hate to buy it and find out I need
other programs (of course upgrades are inevitable but , well you know) Anyway I
wanted to ask you a question...Have you noticed the geos v2.0 manual isn't
quite upto speed with the software? I finally figured out that despite what the
manual says, if you use the 1764 as a Ramdisk you cannot select at the same
time shaddow 1541 But you can select DMA. So I configured the 1541 as drive
A, the 1764 as 1541 ramdisk as drive B. I hope this is what they meant as the
best configuration to take best advantage of speed.

Russ,
If you've only got one real 1541, then that probably is the best overall
configuration. If you owned two 1541's, it might be worthwhile to experiment
with a shadowed disk. One added bonus of using a RAM disk is that it saves
wear and tear on the real drives, which can use all the help they can get

That makes sense....thanks Ed, the Geos manual was a bit confusing. They made
it sound like you could have the REU shaddow a 1541 and act like a ramdisk at
the same time.

None of the BSW manuals has a solid basis in reality <grin> I worked with
some of the beta test manuals, and I TRIED to get them to re-write them so they
fit what the software actually did, but no go. I think you did pick the right
combination.
I am going to order a copy of Renegade for myself just as soon as I can afford
it.

Marte, ever hear of people having trouble with the expansion port on an old
(original design)C64? My REU keeps popping out of the socket on one side. I've
finally sort of managed to keep it inserted with some rubber band work but
there
must be a more "professional" way. I wish the engineers at Commodore would
have had enough insight to develop some kind of a "locking" mechanism like
scress or something to join the port with the cartridge instead of just hoping
the male to female pin design will hold up. Can you imagine a vertical 1764
plugged into an expansion device like aprospand?

Hmmmm. No, I've never heard of that particular problem with a 64, although I
used to have all kinds of trouble with the cartridges on the Vic-20. It got to
the point where I told my kids they were going to have to pick one game and
stick to it, because I was sick and tired of wrestling with those stupid
cartridges. We got a 3-cartrige expander from Cardco, but only used it a
couple times before we put the Vic away for good.
My kids have the 64 set up in their room, and they have a FastLoad cartridge
more or less permanently installed in the port. I put a switch in it so it can
be totally disabled, but I don't think they've ever had to do that. Now all I
need to do is get them a new SID chip so they've got sound again.

Russ,
A veritcal 1764 plugged into an Aprospand? Well, mine's a Navarone with
room for three cartridges, but it's holding a vertical 1764 just fine, along
with an Epyx Fast Load cart.
So far (about two weeks <grin>), so good!

Bob! Thank You! I was hoping someone thought of that configuration. Does
inverting the REU like that hinder the air circulation since the vents are now
on the front instead of on top?

Your Commodore must be starting to look like a Sinclair zx-81 with all that
stuff hanging on the back of it! This is the sort of thing that killed the
Sinclair. Hardware hackers like us that just couldn't stop improving the basic
design.

Russ,
Actualy, I'm using that configuration because it's the only way the REU
will fit into my desktop/keyboard setup.
I have no idea about the air circulation. Seems to me, though, that
having those vents facing out, and in a vertical orientation, would help some
with the circulation.
Now: Come on, software vendors... let's have some games and word
processors to go with that REU! (Yes, I know about the Write Stuff, BTW.)

To use an REU as a RAM 1541 requires 170K. To shadow a real 1541 requires
another 170K. That's 340K.
More RAM than a 1764 has.

modifying the 1764 by adding another256K, any thoughts? (Boy, I wish the guy
writing the manual would actually boot the software and observe what it
actually does)(GRIN)

I have a short file in Library 2 of CBMCOM that describes how to expand the
memory of a 1700 REU, if that's any help. I think the filename is REUEXP.TXT,
but doing a BRO KEY:REU should turn it up in any case.

I have a 2 slot from CARD CO for My 64. Course their out of business THere is
also a thing called an L-BOW (2 slot + reset switch) One slot is simply
extention of the internal slot (lays flat) the other is upright, Should look
good, would work super here if I had one John

I talked to a user here in Metro Detroit who did install extra ram in his 1764.
Worked fine however I would buy good ram. He advised that the upper 256K on his
was "A bit flakey". This could have been due to cheep ram.
Page 2. You CAN use a 1750 with a 64 if your power supply can take the strain.
NO MODIFICATIONS are needed to either the computer or REU except you MUST have
a bigger P.S. than what C= shipps. I built my own P.S. and am considering a
1750 here. (Can't afford right now and with this month's CIS bill it might be a
while)
Note on page 1, Controler chips check for how much ram is present (like the
VIC used to do) and configure accordingly. They do not have to be changed John

The only reason why I might worry about your set up not helping heat
dissapation is if the aluminum tabs don't connect to the RF shield in the
computer to help the heat sinks get rid of heat. I think that is why C= put
those little metal tabs on the REU. And if you plug it into an expander that
doesn'T t connect those, then you might eventually overheat the RAM chips. I
have also found that my 1764 doesn't like being on my Aprrspand. I've thought
about getting an ELbow. Do you think it would work better? And I'd like to keep
my QBB plugged in all the time with GEOS on it ready to go. Tony

Anthony,
I checked my metal clips by touch after the REU had been on for 15-20
minutes, and they weren't even warm. Seems to me a solid state device like the
1764, having relatively modest power input, would not tend to warm up, but I'm
not electronics expert by any means. It WOULD be useful to know for sure if
heating of the 1764 is a problem, however. I certainly don't won'to have a REU
meltdown on my hands! <grin> Thanks for your interest.
